Detox Foods
Detox foods are foods which are used to cleanse unwanted toxins out of the body. This type of treatment can be used in short bursts to help people recover from a period where they have over indulged, for example at the Christmas holidays, or it can form part of a diet program to be followed in the long term.
If you feel a need to detoxify the body, then you would be well advised to sit down and think about changing your overall lifestyle and your diet. Approaching a detox program from a point of view of making long term, lasting improvement is always the best way to deal with the problem. Many of the foods which form part of the more mild detox programs are the same ones which should form part of your staple diet.
There are, of course, far more extreme detox programs, using juice fasts and even enemas and colonic irrigation. These are obviously not safe to use for extended periods of time, and are intended only to be used as short term cleansers. The gentler detox diets, which simply involve swapping over rich starchy and sugary foods for more wholesome fare, are safe to stick to for much longer.
A sugar detox will involve this kind of dietary switch. Sugar is one of those nutrients, sometimes called anti-nutrients, that the average Westerner has too much of in their diet. Withdrawing gradually from foods which are overly rich in sugar will be a huge step on the path to a better, healthier life.
If you are attempting to detox from sugar, then you will need to avoid some of the foods which are actively recommended on other detox programs. Specifically, fruit and fruit juices will need to be avoided, even though they contain only natural sugar.
The diet can be based around raw vegetables, and there are many other protein and even starch based foods which can be added to them. Carbohydrate based foods can include porridge, potatoes, brown rice and any cakes or noodles made from it, and even bread. Make sure that there is no added sugar if you are buying a supermarket brand.
For protein, fish is an option on a detox aimed purely at reducing sugar, and even meat is an option really, although it would not be recommended. If you do not want to take in animal protein, you can consider soya products such as tofu. Seeds and nuts are good sources of protein and other nutrients which the body needs. Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, which helps boost the immune system, and sunflower seeds contain many useful vitamins and minerals.
It is important not to drink any sugary drink, but to stick to plain water and herbal teas. Fluid intake should be kept high, as this all helps to flush toxins out of the body, especially when the fruit juice option is simply not there. It should not be difficult to formulate a wholesome diet to help you overcome your sugar cravings, as there are so many cheap and enjoyable detox foods.
